Doctor of Medicine Program

Students learn the basic sciences (termed Medical Sciences in AUC's curriculum) in Sint Maarten the on-island portion of medical training lasts for roughly half of your AUC education (72 weeks, less than two years). Dedicated faculty, many recruited from US institutions, teach a US-modeled basic sciences curriculum in highly advanced lecture halls and facilities in our high-tech, high-touch campus environment.

After completing basic sciences, you'll move on to clinical rotations in the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom at AUC-affiliated teaching hospitals. During this portion of the program, you'll serve as a member of a team comprised of students, residents, and attendings. You'll examine laboratory results, undertake certain procedures, perform histories and physicals, and more. Students proceed to residency placement after completing the clinical program.

The Application Process

Step #1

Review our admissions requirements. AUC accepts MCAT scores going back five years from the date you apply.

Step #2

Complete our admissions assessment (MCAT required). If you qualify, the admissions director for your region may reach out to answer your questions.

Step #3

Submit our quick online application via desktop computer, your mobile phone, or our official app.

Is AUC accredited?

Yes. AUC's medical school facilities and curriculum are accredited by the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM), which is the accreditor used by the country of St. Maarten. Being an international foreign operating school, AUC is not eligible to seek accreditation from traditional US accreditors.

How does that compare to US accreditation?

A special review board appointed by the US Department of Education (the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation, or NCFMEA) has reviewed ACCM's standards and determined that they are comparable to those used to accredit medical schools in the US. This is an important distinction for AUC, and one held by only a few Caribbean schools.

What can I expect in the basic and clinical sciences curricula?

During the first two years of your education, you'll complete exciting coursework that seamlessly integrates basic and clinical sciences. In addition to intensive study of subjects like anatomy, microbiology, and histology, you'll complete Introduction to Clinical Medicine (ICM), AUC's four-semester, case-based clinical skills course. In small groups and supported by faculty, you'll examine and interview standardized patients, document patient histories, hone exam skills through advanced simulation technology, and more.

For the remaining 72 weeks of your education, you'll complete core rotations, plus any elective rotations you select, at US or UK teaching hospitals.

"I believe that AUC students are educated with a broad problem-based background and learning structure that further prepares them to move the healthcare system forward. Students who choose to do their rotations, volunteer, or work overseas are further uniquely qualified to participate in discussions about the future of healthcare in the United States.""
